NASA‘s Kennedy Space Center is surrounded by 140,000 acres of protected wildlife: The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.
During the Space Coast River Tour cruise through the barge canal, you may see wild boar, which are on the south border of the refuge.
Stretching from the barge canal to Canaveral National Seashore, the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is home to an estimated 5,00 alligators and 330 different species of birds. Half of the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge consists of brackish creeks that mix the Indian River Lagoon with the Atlantic Ocean.
One of Florida’s cleanest beaches and a surfer’s paradise is Playlinda Beach, which is part of the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. During a walk along Playinda’s sand, you can see the shuttle on NASA’s launching pad, as well as NASA’s vehicle Assembly Building.
